Self Care for Pain

Last week I don't know what happened but in the middle of the day my foot started to bother me and it just started to get worse. I was limping around and in a panic because my brother's wedding was on Saturday and I was trying to figure out how I would be able to walk and dance in heels.

Wednesday I brought out 'old injury' liniment and soaked a cotton ball and rubbed it over my foot and then soaked a paper towel and let it rest on my foot while I worked. At lunch I took out a dish tub and filled it with Detoxify bath salts from NAP @home and soaked my feet for 20 minutes.

The next day I could walk with just slight discomfort and by wedding day my foot pain was a distant memory.

What is Old Injury liniment?

Old Injury is a blend of Chinese herbs that are cooked and then soaked in vodka for a min of six months. The older the 'brew' the more potent the herbs. Old injury can be used for just about any injury that is older then 72 hours and is particularly useful with bruises and pain that gets worse when its cold, rainy, snowy and/or windy. Wrap the area in the liniment and leave on for as long as you can 1- 8 hours. Its best to avoid if the area in pain feels warm to the touch or is inflamed.

NAP is now carrying Old Injury liniment in 4 oz spray bottles for $15.

Citrus For Depression

As the days are starting to become noticeably shorter more and more people are starting to think about seasonal depression.

Citrus Essential Oils have an uplifting aroma that are helpful in the winter months for keeping depression at bay especially if you don't have the time to come in for regular acupuncture treatments.

Here are a couple ways you can use them in your everyday routine.

* Refresh NAP @home bath salts first thing in the morning.

* Diffuse Lemon essential oil at home or in your office. NAP recently got a new diffuser and we have been diffusing lemon and citrus fresh. Take a deep breath the next time you stop in for a NAP.

* Place a few drops of your favorite citrus essential oil (orange, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit etc) on a cotton ball and put in the air vents of your car.

* Fill a spray bottle with water and 5-10 drops of your favorite citrus essential oils and spray around room.

* Place a drop of your favorite citrus oil in your water or tea. **make sure you are using therapeutic grade essential oils before taking internally.

Remember citrus oils are photosensitive! Just like when you put lemon juice in your hair for highlights in the summer as a kid citrus essential oils can cause skin sensitivities or burns if used in direct sun light.

Not sure which oil to choose? Info about oils is from www.youngliving.org If you'd like an oil I place an order every 2nd of the month.

Lemon: Lemon (Citrus limon) has a strong, purifying, citrus scent that is revitalizing and uplifting. Lemon consists of 68 percent dlimonene, a powerful antioxidant. It is delightfully refreshing in water and may be beneficial for the skin. Lemon may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods. Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the rinds of lemons. Jean Valnet MD estimated that it takes 3,000 lemons to produce one kilo of oil. In his book, The Practice of Aromatherapy, Valnet wrote that lemon is a tonic for supporting the nervous and sympathetic nervous system.*

Orange: Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil has a rich, fruity scent that lifts the spirit while providing a calming influence on the body. Orange brings peace and happiness to the mind. It is rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene and aids in maintaining normal cellular regeneration.

Tangerine: Tangerine (Citrus reticulata) is a calming essential oil with a sweet, tangy aroma, similar to orange. It helps with occasional nervous irritability. An excellent oil to help uplift the spirit and bring about a sense of security, tangerine is also rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene.

Grapefruit: Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) has a fresh, citrus aroma that is energizing and uplifting. Rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene, it is nourishing to the skin. Like many coldpressed citrus oils, it is a popular oil to use in conjunction with weight management programs. Grapefruit may also be used to enhance the flavor of food and water.

Citrus Fresh (blend): Citrus Fresh™ is a relaxing, calming blend loved by children and adults alike. Rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene, it supports the immune system and overall health* while bringing about a sense of well-being, creativity, and feelings of joy. It also works as an air purifier.

Possible skin sensitivity. If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult your physician. Dilution recommended for both topical and internal use. Dilute before using on sensitive areas such as the face, neck, genital area, etc. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid using on infants and very small children. Citrus oils should not be applied to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or ultraviolet light within twelve hours.

Yoga + Acupuncture = Yogapuncture Now on Monday Nights!

I have been toying with the idea of this class for quite some time and many of you have asked when I will be teaching yoga in the area. I'm happy to say the first session is starting Sept 10th and will run for 3 weeks. Its a new reason to be excited about Mondays!

What is Yogapuncture?

Yogapuncture is a 90 minute class that blends the best of 2 of my favorite things: yoga and acupuncture. Yogapuncture is a classical hatha yoga class that ends with a long final relaxation (savasana) incorporating an acupuncture treatment for balance. If you've had community acupuncture you know that a group environment magnifies the benefits of your treatment, adding yoga into the mix will also magnify your relaxation! In 2010, 150 participants received acupuncture together making it the largest group treatment in the world.

Our first session will run 3 weeks and the theme will be around maintaining balance and preparing the body for fall.

Each session can take a max of 10 students and must be paid in FULL at the start of the first class. Call the office 815.893.9825 or send us an email to reserve your space just put "yogapuncture" in the title of your email.

Where will Yogapuncture be located?

Yogapuncture will take place at Radiant Heart Yoga in Alogonquin (1130 N Main Street) on Monday evenings from 8:00-9:30. The entrance of the studio is located in the back of the building.

What does yogapuncture cost?

Each yogapuncture class is 90 minutes long which includes a classical yoga class and acupuncture treatment and costs $33. The first session is 3 classes for $99. Because space is limited you must commit to the full session and payment is due before or at the start of the first class. If you'd like to pay with a credit card please do so ahead of time.

Its Time For Your Seasonal Tune-Up

Its always about this time of year the fall tricks me into thinking the cooler weather is a good idea. These cool nights make for good sleeping weather and light sweaters and sandals  almost feel decadent. Then all of a sudden a winter coat is a necessity and sun shine until 9pm seems like a distant memory.

In Chinese Medicine this time of year is known as late summer. This is a transition point in the seasonal cycle and its when our spleen/stomach system is working its hardest to bridge the gap between the lightness of summer and the heaviness of autumn. Its also around this time that many people get sick because of the strong changes in our environment. Many people have commented that it feels like winter at 72 because we've become so accustomed to 100 days.

Now is the best time to get an acupuncture tune up treatment so that your body can better adapt to the changes in our environment. This will help boost the immune system and keep SAD at bay when the winter months set in. The lung and large intestine are most active in the fall. If you are prone to colds/flus and seasonal allergies during the fall months now is the perfect time for prevention.

It is also a good time to start slowly transitioning heavier foods and warming herbs and spices into your diet. The spleen and stomach do best with yellow root veggies and full sweet flavor foods like sweet potatoes, squashes etc. Starting your day with hot lemon water and/or warm cereals like steel cut oatmeal is also a good idea.

Schedule your tune up today!

Natural Remedy for Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

I've recently noticed that there have been a couple concerns of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease in the area. Hand foot and mouth disease is a common viral disease usually seen in children younger than 5 years of age. Symptoms include fever, blister sores in the mouth and a skin rash.

The best way to prevent this disease is to wash your hands regularly and to avoid close contact with those that have been infected.

If your child has been exposed to hand foot and mouth disease it is important to stay hydrated. There are 3 essential oil blends that may help to shorten the duration of symptoms: thieves essential oil blend, mountain savory, and purification essential oil blend.

Mix one drop of essential oil of your choice with one tablespoon coconut or olive oil. Massage into the spine and/or bottoms of the feet. Use what you have available or alternate between all 3 oils. You can do this as much as every diaper change until symptoms are gone.

Remember it always a good idea to contact your health care provider about any questions or concerns you may have before starting any treatment.

For more information or to purchase essential oils please let me know.

Intro to Essential Oils

I thought I'd write down a few notes from the class yesterday if you were feeling frazzled with the kiddos running around or forgot something or need something to look at while nursing. :)

There are 3 grades of essential oils: food, cosmetic, and therapeutic.Oils are classified as therapeutic grade depending on their chemical profile. AFNOR in Europe is who controls these guidelines and Young Living in the U.S. uses this standard for their therapeutic grade oils. The FDA holds no regulation over essential oils and many labels are misleading. If a labels says do not take internally or has an expiration date chances are the oil is cut and mixed with a solvent or the plant was grown using pesticides. The only 2 oils that can not be taken internally from young living are jasmine and neroli due to how the plants are processed. In order for an oil to be considered a therapeutic grade oil there are many factors to be considered: the soil, the environment, how the oil is extracted etc etc.

Pesticides and other solvents are mostly odorless and can be hard to detect. Therapeutic grade oils can be applied to the skin 'neat', mixed in with a carrier oil such as olive or coconut oil, or taken internally either by mixing in water, tea or rice milk or put inside of a vegetable capsule.

Safety:

Therapeutic grade oils can cause skin sensitivity if the plant has a very warm or cold nature such as cinnamon or clove or if there is a high build up of chemicals from personal care products under the skin (such as Sodium Laurel Sulfate). If a red or burning reaction occurs do NOT put water on the skin. Oil and water do not mix and will intensify the burning. Instead mix with a fatty oil like olive oil to cut the essential oil until the burning stops.

Citrus oils are photosensitive and are best put where the sun doesn't shine if you are usually topically. Just like adding lemon juice to your hair to lighten in the summer, lemon essential oil will burn the skin if applied before going out into the sun.

Heating essential oils is never recommended because it will cause the oil to break down and create a toxic environment. To diffuse into the air use a cold air diffuser, spray bottle mixed with water and essential oil, place on cotton balls and put in air vents. It is not recommended to use in a humidifier as the essential oils will break down the plastic parts.

What is it?

Essential oils are the blood of a plant. The essential oil contains the defense mechanism of the plant and this is why depending on the chemical profile of the plant being used has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic properties.

When looking under a microscope essential oils and human blood looks very similar and this is why the body responds so readily to essential oils of a therapeutic nature.

Essential oils are concentrated. For example one drop of lemon essential oil is equivalent to the rinds of 26 lemons. Oils can be extracted from the roots, stems, leaves or flowers of the plant. Depending on how an oil must be extracted will determine the cost of an essential oil some are more expensive than others. Rose oil is the most expensive essential oil costing close to $200 for a 5ml bottle because it takes 1,000 rose petals to produce just one drop of rose essential oil.

Aromatherapy:

Sense of smell is the only sense directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain the emotional center and also connected with controlling heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone balance.  Essential oils can be used for physical and emotional balance.

The general rule is that if you are particularly drawn to a scent you need it emotionally and if you do not like the scent of oil you need it physically.

How to apply:

A little goes a very long way. Because of the similarities between essential oils and human blood our bodies process and use essential oils very quickly. One drop of essential oil applied topically is in every cell of the body within 20 minutes and completely out of the system within 2 hours.

If you are unsure of how to apply an essential oil start with the soles of the feet. The feet are the most porous part of the body and have reflex zones mapping the entire body. If you are using an oil that is particularly stinky the feet are also furthest from your and everyone else's noses. :) My nephew would use vetiver essential oil for ADD and apply on the soles of his feet at bedtime every night so he didn't smell like vetiver during school time.

Typically it is best to hold the bottle over your non-dominant hand so that a drop falls into your palm. Circle the oil clockwise (healthy DNA spins clockwise) and apply as needed.

If you are using an oil for muscular pain apply directly over the area or reflex points of the feet. If using for breathing, congestion or cough apply around sinuses staying away from the eyes and chest.

If you are using to calm or for stress, anxiety etc apply to the wrists, heart and back of neck.

You can simply breathe the essential oil straight from the bottle, diffuse or spray into the air also.

Lavender is probably the most versatile essential oil because it contains adaptagens in the chemical profile meaning that is will be uplift your energy level or be sedating depending on what you need. Lavender is antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, reduces blood fat/cholesterol, combats excess sebum on the skin. It can be used for respiratory infections, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, PMS, skin conditions (perinial repair, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring, stretch marks) burns, hair loss, insomnia and nervous tension.

True lavender is often extended with hybrid lavender or synthetic linalol and linalyl acetate which can causes burning of the skin.

Thieves Oil is a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary. The story goes that a group of apothecaries during the bubonic plague used these oils and herbs to protect themselves from getting the plague in order to steal from the sick and dead bodies. Research confirms that these particular blend of oils is 99.9% effective in killing bacteria and because it comes from a plant source the bacteria can't mutate like with other antibacterial soaps and cleansers.

Here are some uses: diffuse for 15-30 minutes every 3-4 hours. Apply to bottoms of feet, throat, stomach, or abdomen. Dilute 1:15 in vegetable oil and massage over thymus. For headaches put 1 drop on tongue and push against roof of mouth. For toothaches or canker sores put one drop on a q-tip and rub over area for pain relief. Put 4-8 drops on cotton ball and locate on vents. Add 2 drops to a wet cloth and put in clothes dryer.

Where to get essential oils?

I place an order once a month and have wholesale prices. I don't upcharge to retail you just pay for tax and shipping. Just let me know if you'd like something and I will put it in the order.

You can create your own account through Young Living. They will ask for a member number and you can use mine 770950. If you create a wholesale account you must purchase the start living starter kits that includes a bunch of info about the oils and some sample with a 5 ml bottle of peppermint and lavender. You will also get a voucher for 1 diffuse for 50% off. To earn points towards free product you must be on autoship of 50pv each month but the autoship is no longer a requirement to keeping a wholesale account. You can order oils whenever you want without the autoship you just won't earn points for your order and you have to place one order a year to stay active.

The Essential Oil Desk Reference compiled by Essential Science Publishing is a great book to have around when learning about the oils as well. I'm sure you can find it on amazon cheap.

Nap Time for New Moms

Starting this Wednesday Neighborhood Acupuncture Place will be hosting Nap Time for New Moms.

Moms can feel free to drop in any time between 10:30a-12:30p with their little ones. Because it can be almost impossible at times to get out of the house with a "little" no appointment is necessary for NTNM. Acupuncture is great for relieving stress and we want your acupuncture nap to be as stress-less as possible.

We understand that it can be hard to find baby-friendly places to hang out at and even harder to take care of yourself so that's why we've dedicated this time just for moms. There is something about the environment during a community acupuncture session that is calming and kids can feel it too, often napping alongside or on mom. We can adjust your treatment to accommodate your and your child's needs.

Not sure why you would nap with us?

Acupuncture can help

Depression (postpartum and otherwise)
Anxiety
Quality of sleep (make the most of the sleep you are getting)

Sunscreens to Avoid

I came across this link yesterday and thought I would share it. Remember your skin is your largest organ. What you put on it gets absorbed into your system, sunscreen is no different.

This post gives a great list of sun screens to avoid based on the chemicals and another with good options of sun screens to use.

Enjoy this sunny day today!

People's Organization of Community Acupuncture

Some of you may or may not know that community acupuncture was started in Portland Oregon by Working Class Acupuncture in 2002 as a way to make acupuncture available and affordable to every day people and later as a way to make living wage jobs available to acupuncturists. Working Class started teaching other acupuncturists how to do the same thing through a non-for-profit called Community Acupuncture Network.

A little over 2 years ago I heard about community acupuncture and started doing some research because it made a lot of sense to me. I changed my practice almost over night from charging $70 a treatment, treating one patient at a time on a massage table letting them rest for 20-30 minutes as I was taught in school to treating patients in recliners in a group setting charging $15-40 (patients choose what works for them) where people could rest for as long as they liked. This set up is exactly how I saw acupuncture practiced when I studied in China. What happened was that the office got busier and people got better a whole lot faster. Many people worried about how I would pay my overhead charging so low but that was never a problem either and I don't stay up nights worrying about patients that were getting better but had to stop coming because they just couldn't afford to anymore. I love that now whole families can come get acupuncture together.

Recently the community acupuncture movement, as it has become known, has made strides to become even more inclusive with the formation of the cooperative People's Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA). Students, Acupuncturists, Community Acupuncture Clinics, patients, and regular old people can get involved in the coop. Now when patients have friends in a city with no affordable acupuncture available they can rally together with POCA to recruit an acupuncturist to set up a community acupuncture clinic. There are lots of other ways to get involved as well. One way is by becoming a volunteer at your local community acupuncture clinic. Volunteers can have many tasks but mostly its the tasks that you are best at and helps to keep community acupuncture sustainable.

NAP recently recruited two awesome volunteers to help out at the front desk because it seems our phone never rings unless we are in the treatment room with patients. This has been a huge benefit for myself and Marguerite to have help so we can better attend to patients. We still have some reception shifts available if you might be interested in helping out. There are several other projects we'd love volunteers helping out with as well.

As a POCA volunteer you get some great perks.
* 3 free treatment cards for your friends and family that can be used at any POCA community acupuncture clinic
* Free treatment on your birthday to be used at any POCA community clinic
* 1 year membership to POCA paid for by NAP
* (and probably the best part) unlimited acupuncture treatments at NAP for as long as you have commited to being a volunteer with us.

If you are interested ask us for an application, we'd love to have you be apart of our growing community!
